The Watermelon Woman is directed, written by and acted by Cheryl Dunye (1996). It is one of the films she made.

Her films often explore the boundaries between documentary and fiction and are about the experience of black lesbian women.

Ren Hang

Is a chinese artist who created images around sexuality, which is largely taboo in China. Most of his work is there seen as provocative and pornographic, but that opinion is, of course, in the eyes of the beholder.
He often got in contact with the authorities because pornography is illegal in China. In Europa he found space to exhibit his photographs and gained recognition.

Although he has never been out publicly, his family and friends did confirmed the photographer identified as a gay man.

Text for Julie:

Before doing this exercise I was not aware of how many queer makers I know. I threw this list together with makers I like, with no particular order, just in the way that the list was made by Amy.
Now, I can see that everyone on the list is queer, which is a reflection of myself and it feels good to see so many of them.
Chella Man is an artist, LGBTQI+ activist and actor. I've gotten more and more admiration for his work and his presence on the internet as an activist en spokesperson for the community.
Both pictures have been made by me during troubled times. They are dear to me because I was able to capture these moments and feelings for myself. I have a need to remember and they are mnemonics for those.

Adding Rafiki, because I just saw this movie (20/10/2020). It's directed by Wanuri Kahiu.

"Rafiki was banned by the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) "due to its homosexual theme and clear intent to promote lesbianism in Kenya contrary to the law".[8] The Board asked the film director to change the ending, as it was too hopeful and positive. Kahiu refused, which led to the ban of the film."

“The feeling of communication is very elusive,” Tsang has said. “In being seen by another, there’s always an incompleteness to that understanding.” Often working collaboratively, she combines text, image, dance, music, and activism to create hybrid ar forms that question traditional concepts of representation. This installation draws inspiration from an essay by poets and critical theorists Fred Moten and Stefano Harney, which explores how ideas of black, queer, and trans identities are intertwined and constantly in formation. Two videos intermittently overlap, creating an entanglement of images and living bodies. In each video, two performers move through a series of duets. The choreography is a form of contact improvisation, a collaborative practice in which participants use touch instead of sight to generate movement together. As the performers are pushed and pulled, they shift between gestures of tenderness and violence, elationand grief, or degeneration and rebirth. In overlaying the projections and employing movement as language, Tsang has sought to create “impossible” images—those that capture the fluidity and ambiguity of lived experience.
